The International Atomic Energy Agency (abbreviated as IAEA) has been implementing the Asian Nuclear Safety Network (abbreviated as ANSN) activities since 2002. As part of this effort, Topical Group on Emergency Preparedness and Response (abbreviated as EPRTG) for nuclear or radiation disasters was established in 2006 under the umbrella of the ANSN. Based on the EPRTG proposal, the IAEA conducted 23 Asian regional workshops in the 12 years from 2006 to 2017. Typical topical fields of the regional workshops were nuclear emergency drills, emergency medical care, long-term response after nuclear/radiological emergency, international cooperation, national nuclear disaster prevention system. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has produced coordinators for EPRTG since its establishment and has led its activities since then. This report summarizes the Asian regional workshops conducted by the IAEA based on the recommendations of the EPRTG.

Decomposition of ${it p}$-Nonylphenols (NPs) in water at 1 $$mu$$mol dm$$^{-3}$$ was decreased exponentially with absorbed dose when NPs were irradiated by $$^{60}$$Co$$gamma$$-rays. Two products having molecular weight of 236, presumably OH adducts of NPs, were detected by LC-MS analyses. The elimination of estrogen activity of aqueous NPs solution including such irradiation products at 5000 Gy (J kg$$^{-1}$$) was confirmed by the yeast two hybrid assay. These results should expand the application of ionizing radiation to the treatment of NPs.

Improvement of high-voltage performance of acceleration tubes by cleaning the walls with a high-pressure water jet

Takeuchi, Suehiro; Nakanoya, Takamitsu; Kabumoto, Hiroshi; Yoshida, Tadashi

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research A, 513(3), p.429 - 438, 2003/11

At the JAERI Tandem accelerator, an acceleration tube replacing plan is proceeding to increase the acceleration voltage toward 20 MV. Lengthy conditioning is generally necessary for a large tube system. We had an idea to clean the tubes with high-pressure water-jet rinsing before installation. We cleaned tubes and tested them at 1 MV and 3 MV. The both results exhibited that the voltages went beyond the rated voltages and discharge activities were much less than the old records. During the test of new tubes at 3 MV, the conditioning proceeded well and an extremely stable condition was fulfilled within 24 hours. In conclusion, the cleaning was found to be a very promising way to improve high-voltage performance of the tubes in a large tube system.
